THE lawyer of controversial car dealer Lynard Allan Bigcas denied there is a smuggling case against her client as she expressed confidence over their defense despite the ongoing Congressional inquiry.

Lawyer Aimee Torrefranca told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro that they have a very “meritorious defense.”

Torrefranca said agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and officials of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) failed to appear during the Congressional inquiry earlier held.

She claimed the documents submitted by NBI were “questionable”.

She added that among the crucial issue they raised during the inquiry was regarding the vehicle identification number of Bigcas’s motorcycle that was earlier confiscated by the NBI and said to be owned by Hollywood scriptwriter Skip Wood.

“The motorcycle of Allan is genuine and is not tampered, although I don’t want to preempt the proceeding but there’s no smuggling case actually,” she said.

Meanwhile, lawyer Jose Justo Yap, former NBI-Northern Mindanao director who is now assigned in Central Luzon, expressed surprise as to the non-appearance of NBI and BOC officials in the Congressional inquiry, as claimed by Torrefranca.

Yap said he was not informed of the scheduled inquiry and did not receive any communication.

“Kailan daw ang inquiry? Kasi the last time na nag-attend kami ng hearing ay ‘yung sa illegal possession of firearms na kaso ni Bigcas sa Bukidnon court,” Yap told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.

However, he emphasized that the Congressional inquiry will not affect the cases of Bigcas that are pending in the courts of Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro.

Bigcas is facing cases of smuggling and illegal possession of firearms.

Recently, the car dealer was also involved in a shooting incident in Davao City and an alleged hit-and-run case in Cagayan de Oro.
