New York personal injury lawyer David Perecman comments on a New York Post (3/14/2012) article reporting a significant drop in the average number of monthly elevator inspections conducted in New York. The law requires the Department of Buildings to inspect every elevator at least once a year. The New York personal injury lawyers at The Perecman Firm have handled a number of elevator accident cases over the past 30 years.

New York, New York (PRWEB) March 21, 2012

Elevators in New York are being inspected less often. According to the New York Post (3/14/2012), the average number of monthly elevator inspections conducted by the New York City Department of Buildings dropped 28 percent since 2008.

“Keeping elevators safe should be a priority. Not only is it the law, but if someone is hurt because an elevator fails, there will be consequences for property and business owners,” said New York personal injury lawyer Perecman, a New York personal injury lawyer for over 30 years. “Accidents can lead to costly liability lawsuits. Owners should want their elevators inspected to make sure they are in perfect working order.”

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer’s office has data showing the average monthly inspections of elevators from January 2006 to September 2008 were 7,930. Between the end of that period and June 2011, the average was 5,723.

There were 53 New York elevator accidents in 2010, and 43 elevator accidents in 2011, noted DOB officials in the New York Post.

In June 2010, only 3,016 of the city’s 60,000 elevators were inspected by the DOB, said the New York Post.

“The importance of the inspection and maintenance of elevators cannot be understated. Many people depend on the professional assessment, upkeep, and replacement of worn-out elevator parts to keep them safe,” said New York personal injury lawyer Perecman, founder of the Perecman Firm, one of New York’s personal injury law firms.

Victims of New York elevator accidents and/or their families may be entitled to significant compensation for New York elevator accident injuries, especially when they are caused by improper maintenance or negligence.
