A lawyer who formerly represented Unley Mayor Lachlan Clyne has gone on trial accused of hindering a police investigation of his client.
Clyne is accused of using the internet in October 2010 to impersonate one of the other mayoral candidates during local government elections and sending out inaccurate and defamatory material.
Clyne is yet to enter pleas on five charges.
Police say his lawyer at the time, 57-year-old Cormac McCarron, impeded their investigation by removing Clyne's computer from a premises at Goodwood while they searched the building.
Adelaide Magistrates Court was told McCarron left the premises, but later returned with Clyne and the computer and apologised to police for taking it.
It is alleged he told police Clyne had wanted to back the computer up, to ensure nothing could be added to it.
