Sen. Baucus’ advocacy for asbestos victims merits special praise, says attorney Joseph W. Belluck of the New York personal injury firm of Belluck & Fox, LLP.
New York, NY (PRWEB) March 24, 2012New York mesothelioma lawyer Joseph W. Belluck applauded the U.S. Senate – especially Sen. Max Baucus – for passing a resolution that designates the first week of April as “National Asbestos Awareness Week.”
“The serious harm caused by exposure to asbestos is a nationwide and worldwide problem,” said Belluck, a partner in Belluck & Fox, LLP, a New York personal injury firm that is nationally recognized for its representation of mesothelioma victims.
“Designating a national awareness week helps focus renewed attention on victims of asbestos disease,” Belluck said. “It also reminds us that more needs to be done to prevent harmful exposure to asbestos.”
By unanimous consent, the Senate on March 6 passed a resolution designating the first week of April as “National Asbestos Awareness Week.” The Senate also urged the U.S. Surgeon General to educate people about health risk posed by asbestos.
It’s the sixth year in a row that Sen. Baucus (D-Montana) has introduced the resolution. It honors the nearly 300 people in Libby, Montana, who have died of asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is a cancer of the lining of the lungs and abdomen. It is associated with occupations that expose workers and veterans to breathing microscopic asbestos fibers.
Many of the victims in Libby worked at the W.R. Grace Company vermiculite mine that closed in 1990. Baucus helped to get the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to declare a public health emergency in Libby, Montana.
“We’d like to single out for praise the determined efforts of Sen. Baucus, who has been actively involved in sponsoring asbestos awareness week resolutions year after year,” Belluck said. “Sen. Baucus knows firsthand the devastation that asbestos disease can cause in a small community.”
Thousands of people throughout the United States face asbestos exposure each year.
“As Sen. Baucus said, it’s important to keep making the public aware of the tragic impact of asbestos exposure,” Belluck said. “Public recognition of a problem is a positive step toward addressing it.”
The New York law firm of Belluck & Fox is dedicated to securing compensation for victims of asbestos-related disease. The firm files personal injury lawsuits and wrongful death claims. It also works to increase public awareness of the dangers of asbestos.
Approximately, 2,500 people in the U.S. are diagnosed each year with mesothelioma, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The incurable cancer could be largely preventable if asbestos were banned, Belluck said.
The U.S. has significantly decreased its consumption of asbestos but imports of the mineral fiber still continue for use in products such as roof materials.
